What IMPLAN Data Assets Are Available?

IMPLAN’s academic roots created a continuing commitment to enhance and promote research into regional economies. To that end, we are making IMPLAN Data Assets available in a convenient package for departmental, classroom, and library use. 

For nearly 20 years these Data Assets have powered our I-O/SAM modeling software, and by making IMPLAN data more accessible, our goal is to promote new research and applications of data to inform decision making for regional economies.  

What Data Are Being Made Available?

County-to-County Commodity-Level Trade Flow Data

County-to-county commodity-level trade flow data is the engine behind IMPLAN’s gravity model and available for the first time in raw form. Some applications of this data could include CGE modeling, using commodity trade as a spatial dependence weight as opposed to distance, and identification of economic regions based on commodity flows.

County-Level Demographic, Industrial, & Commodity Panel Data

County-level demographic, industrial, and commodity panel data (2001-2017) is built using IMPLAN’s latest and best methodologies. It includes the Shannon-Weaver economic diversity index and has been enhanced and expanded over the past 20 years of trusted data development.

Enhanced Environmental Data

Enhanced environmental data ties economic impacts to environmental impacts. Working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we’ve bridged their emissions data to IMPLAN’s Industry Sectors. Understand land use, water use, and emissions by industry in your region or create virtual environmental trade models of your own.

State & County Tax Data

State and county tax data is an extensive database of state and county tax data spanning 2001 to 2018. IMPLAN has combined data from the most recent Census of Governments, Annual Survey of State and Local Governments, and the State Government Tax Collections survey to form this data set.

Annual Census of Employment and Wages (CEW) Data

Annual census of employment and wages (CEW) data consists of annual employment and income data organized by NAICS code based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Employment and Wages (CEW). The data is available at the U.S., state, and county level and spans 2001 to 2018 in 2017 NAICS codes. Since IMPLAN imputes the non-disclosures from the original BLS release, it is particularly useful for work in rural counties.

How Are These Datasets Being Delivered?

These are standalone datasets available outside of our software to all researchers regardless of previous experience with IMPLAN. The .CSV or Excel files are offered as a bundled set with departmental access.
